The 32-year-old eclipsed Nigerian Peter Aho’s previous record for the greatest bowling stats in a men’s T20I by playing in 22 T20Is before Wednesday. As of 2021, Aho has six wickets for five runs against Sierra Leone.

Indian bowler Deepak Chahar holds the record for the greatest T20I bowling stats among full members of the ICC, with his 6 wickets for 7 runs against Bangladesh in 2019 ranking joint-third overall with Dinesh Nakrani, who had the same numbers for Uganda against Lesotho in 2021.

With her 7 wickets for 3 runs against France in 2021, Frederique Overdijk of the Netherlands does, however, retain the record for the greatest bowling statistics in a T20I for both men and women.

Twelve bowlers, including Chahar and fellow Indian Yuzvendra Chahal, Australian spinner Ashton Agar, and Sri Lankan tweaker Ajantha Mendis, had previously collected six-wicket hauls in a men’s T20I, but an elusive seven-wicket haul had never been documented until Idrus’ incredible feat.

Idrus single-handedly tore through the batting order as China, who had chosen to bat first, was all out for only 23 runs in 11.2 overs with none of their hitters scoring in double figures. With seven runs, opener Wei Guo Lei led all scorers. Six Chinese hitters were thrown out for nothing.

Malaysia reached 24 for 2 after 4.5 overs of chasing the mark.

The winning team in this competition advances to the Asia Regional Final in Nepal in November, where the top two teams go to the T20 World Cup in 2024.
