Reimagining Cybersecurity for MSMEs: Vishal Prakash Shah on Building Scalable, Proactive Data Protection with Synersoft

Reimagining Cybersecurity for MSMEs: Vishal Prakash Shah on Building Scalable, Proactive Data Protection with Synersoft

In an exclusive interview with Vishal Prakash Shah, Founder and CEO of Synersoft Technologies, we delve into how the company is transforming the cybersecurity landscape for MSMEs through its flagship solution, BLACKbox.

From identifying the critical gap between enterprise-grade technology and MSME accessibility to pioneering a control-first, Zero Trust approach, Shah shares insights on simplifying IT infrastructure while strengthening data security, compliance, and business continuity.

As India’s SME sector accelerates its digital journey, he also outlines how emerging technologies like AI and automation will redefine proactive security and insider threat management in the years ahead.

1. Synersoft Technologies has carved a niche in data security and productivity solutions for SMEs; what key gaps in the market did you initially identify, and how has that vision evolved over time?

When we started, the most visible gap was not the absence of technology; it was the inaccessibility of the right kind of technology for MSMEs.

There were already multiple solutions available in the market; file servers, firewalls, endpoint security tools, backup systems, email systems; but they were designed for large enterprises. To implement them, MSMEs needed skilled IT professionals to procure, integrate, manage, and maintain multiple systems. This made the entire setup complex, expensive, and often underutilized, especially because many features were irrelevant for small-scale usage.

This led us to a simple but powerful design insight:

70% of the MSME market can be effectively served by 30% of the most relevant features; if designed correctly.

BLACKbox emerged from this thinking. It is not a trimmed-down version of enterprise technology; it is a reimagined solution built specifically for MSMEs. It integrates IT standardization, data protection, information security, and compliance into a single hardware and single software platform.

Over time, this vision has evolved from solving IT complexity to enabling compliance readiness, insider threat mitigation, and business continuity, making BLACKbox a foundational system for MSMEs aiming to scale and compete globally.

2. With increasing concerns around data breaches and insider threats, how is Synersoft innovating to provide proactive, rather than reactive, cybersecurity solutions?

Traditional cybersecurity approaches are largely reactive and monitoring-heavy. They rely on continuous surveillance, alerts, and post-incident responses; an approach that works for large enterprises with dedicated IT teams.

MSMEs, however, cannot sustain such models.

At Synersoft, we have taken a fundamentally different approach through BLACKbox by adopting a Zero Trust, control-first architecture.

Instead of focusing on monitoring after an event occurs, BLACKbox enforces strict, pre-defined policies that prevent unauthorized actions in the first place. This includes controls over data access, transfers, email communication, internet usage, and device interactions.

Our philosophy is:

Maximum control with minimum monitoring.

This significantly reduces the dependency on IT resources while strengthening security. By embedding security into the system architecture itself, BLACKbox enables MSMEs to move from a reactive posture to a proactive and preventive cybersecurity framework, especially in addressing insider threats.

3. India’s SME sector is rapidly digitizing; what unique challenges do these businesses face in adopting secure IT infrastructure, and how does Synersoft address them?

As MSMEs digitize, their dependence on digital assets increases significantly. These include:

  • Designs and drawings
  • Spreadsheets and documents
  • Formulations and intellectual property
  • Financial and business data
  • HR and operational information

This shift introduces new risks; particularly insider threats, data leakage, and compliance liabilities, especially when MSMEs are working under NDAs or supplying to large enterprises.

To address these risks through traditional means, MSMEs would typically need to deploy and integrate multiple systems such as:

  • File servers
  • Mail distribution and vigilance systems
  • Endpoint controls
  • Device hardening policy servers
  • Firewalls and VPNs
  • Storage and backup systems

This multi-layered setup is not only expensive but also complex to implement and maintain.

BLACKbox addresses this challenge by offering an “IT-in-a-Box” approach. It consolidates all these capabilities into a single integrated platform, running on one hardware and one software system.

This enables MSMEs to achieve:

  • IT standardization
  • Data protection
  • Information security
  • Compliance readiness
  • Business continuity
  • Insider threat mitigation

all without the need for complex integration or large IT teams.

4. Your flagship solutions focus on integrated security and monitoring; how do you balance user privacy with organizational control in today’s workplace environment?

Balancing privacy and control is critical, especially in modern workplaces where personal and professional usage often overlap.

BLACKbox addresses this through a dual-profile approach.

On user devices; whether Windows systems or mobile devices; data and usage are categorized into:

  • Professional environment
  • Personal environment

All organizational policies; such as data access control, monitoring, and security enforcement; are applied strictly within the professional workspace.

At the same time, users are provided reasonable freedom and privacy in their personal environment, ensuring that their personal data and usage are not intrusively monitored.

This approach ensures that organizations can maintain strong governance and security controls, while employees retain privacy and comfort, leading to better adoption and trust.

5. Looking ahead, how do you see emerging technologies like AI and automation shaping the future of data security, and what role will Synersoft play in that transformation?

AI and automation are already playing a significant role in external threat detection, especially in analyzing traffic patterns, identifying anomalies, and responding to cyber threats in real time.

However, one of the most promising areas for AI lies in insider threat mitigation, which remains a major challenge for MSMEs.

At Synersoft, we see strong potential in leveraging AI to:

  • Analyze user behavior patterns
  • Identify unusual data access or transfer activities
  • Monitor sensitive data categories and keywords
  • Track transaction flows and communication patterns

This will enable systems to move beyond static policy enforcement toward intelligent, context-aware security frameworks.

Our vision is to combine the structured control environment of BLACKbox with AI-driven insights, creating systems that are not only secure by design but also adaptive and predictive.

This will help MSMEs strengthen their security posture while keeping the system simple, efficient, and aligned with their operational realities.
